Home Torah instructs us to use the Name YHVH

What is the Proper Name of the Most High?

E-mail Print

יהוה (YHWH/YHVH) - "YeHoWaH / YeHoVaH / Y'HoVaH", "YeHuWeH / YaHuWeH / YeHuVeH"

יהוה - "yud" "hey" "vov" "heh" (sometimes noted in English as YHVH or YHWH) is the Great Name of the Creator of the Universe. It isn't a title or generic term like "Elohim", "Adonai", or "God". יהוה is the Creator's Proper and Greatest Name and it appears in the Hebrew Scriptures 6,828 times. Unfortunately it is translated as "the LORD" in English scripture translations. Also, what is unfortunate is the treatment to those who support and promote the use of the Great Name as commanded in the WRITTEN Torah. They are frequently called "Sacred Name people" and other disparaging names. This website is not a part of nor does it find it's origin in the "Sacred Name Movement", but the Hebrew Scriptures contain the Sacred Name and we are commanded to "Zekar" It (that is: remember, speak, and mention It), thus we use the Name of the Most High in text and spoken word (Exodus 3:15; Jeremiah 12:16; Deuteronomy 6:13).

Pronunciation:

To hear a pronunciation example, click here: "YHVH of Hosts".

There is of course much debate about how יהוה is pronounced. Yahweh, Yahuweh, Yihweh, Yahoah, Yahowah, Yehovah, Yehowah are but a few hotly contested pronunciations. Orthodox Jews will largely not pronounce the Name, unless they are Messianic, because of an ancient rabbinic ban on such activity, even though (as mentioned earlier) the Torah commands us to "remember/mention" His Name (Exodus 3:15). Side note: Some think the actual culprit for Jew-dah's ban on speaking the Great Name was issued indirectly from יהוה as punishment for Judah exalting their own words and vows above the words and vows of יהוה (Jeremiah 44:26-30).

Meaning:

What is most important regarding the Great Name is It's deep and powerful meaning. When Moses asked the Creator what He is to be called, יהוה answered quite clearly. See verses below (taken from the TS98 version):

Exodus 3:13-15
(13) And Mosheh said to Elohim, “See, when I come to the children of Yisra'el and say to them, ‘The Elohim of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His Name?’ what shall I say to them?”
(14) And Elohim said to Mosheh, “I am that which I am.” [1]And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Yisra’el, ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ” Footnote: [1]The Hebrew text reads: ’eyeh ’asher ’eyeh, the word ’eyeh being derived from hayah which means to be, to exist, but the Aramaic text here in v. 14 reads: ayah ashar ayah. This is not His Name, but it is an explanation that leads up to the revelation of His Name in v. 15, namely: יהוה.
(15) And Elohim said further to Mosheh, “Thus you are to say to the children of Yisra’el, ‘יהוה Elohim of your fathers, the Elohim of Abraham, the Elohim of Yitshaq, and the Elohim of Ya'aqob, has sent me to you. This is My Name forever, and this is My remembrance to all generations.’

Clearly, the root meaning of the Creator's Great Name is that "He Exists". Unlike the other elohim (gods) of the nations, יהוה is the El that truly exists. He was, He is, and He will ever be. He isn't made from clay or stone. He is the One Who is and created all that is, including clay and stone.

Below you will see some examples of the Divine Name in Early (c.1500 BCE) and Middle (c.900 BCE) Paleo-Hebrew.

* Hanok's personal pronunciation preference for יהוה is "Yehovah", but because of the enormous amount of debate on this issue, the Great Name is generally not transliterated into English on this website. The four Hebrew letters or "YHVH" is used instead, allowing the individual reader to choose to pronounce the Great Name however he/she feels the most convicted or convinced. The biggest concern is for every person to remember the Creator's Name and the meaning of His Name. "He Exists" and your very life, your very "existence", depends upon His "existence" more than we may ever know or fully understand.
