The original source of the "Star of David" is difficult to find or document. There is much Jewish and occultic tradition surrounding the symbol, but ultimately, we have to go back and consider the prominent language written during the very time King David lived (about 1,000 BC), i.e., Paleo-Hebrew, to find the best and most likely answer to this question.
The following is "House of David" or "Beit Dawid" in Paleo-Aramaic (almost completely identical to Paleo-Hebrew). The word "David" is boxed in with yellow (which includes two Dalets and a Vov in the middle). Notice the two Dalets are very similar to the triangular Greek letter for Delta, both of which share the 4th position in their respective alphabets... just as the "D" in English.

The Star of David was very likely derived from the two most prominent letters in David's name... formed simply by flipping one Dalet and superimposing or weaving them together.

The star likely became apart of a family crest or a symbol for David's family (and possibly his or his sons' armies). The Dalet connection may have been gradually forgotten as the Jewish people adopted the Aramaic script for their alphabet during and after the Babylonian Captivity.
The following was snipped from Jane Marchant's chart on the "Evolution of the English Alphabet". Notice the row of Dalets which I highlighted in yellow.

The following was snipped from the Table of Semitic Alphabets by M. Lidzbarski, from Gesenius' Hebrew Grammar, edited by E. Kautzsch and A.E. Cowley (Oxford, 1910). Notice the row of Dalets highlighted in yellow.

Star of Lucifer or Star of Heaven?
Revelation 22:16 “I, יהושע, have sent My messenger to witness to you these matters in the assemblies. I am the Root and the Offspring of Daviḏ, the Bright and Morning Star.” (Isa 11:1,10; Rev 5:5)
Numbers 24:17 "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Ya'akov; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the sons of Sheth."
Sadly, Hitler and his Nazi regime used the Star of David as a sign of shame for the Jewish people, but the symbol should not be shameful, nor should being a Jew be shameful. The House of Judah and the House of David has much to be proud of and have done much to bless the world. Furthermore, the BRANCH of David (Isaiah 11:1; Zechariah 3:8; 6:12), the Anointed King that is to come, the Bright and Morning Star (Revelation 22:16), was and will be a Jew from the House of Jew-dah. Yeshua did indeed call the religious leaders of His day a brood of vipers (Luke 3:7; Matthew 3:7; 23:29-39), but He was certainly not calling all Jews this. He and most all of His earliest disciples were Jews. Hatred of Jews on the basis of misrepresenting the words of the Jewish Messiah is sick and twisted, yet this blind and ignorant emotion is pervasive throughout the Christian world (as it was in pre-WWII "Christian" Germany). THIS SHOULD NOT BE SO!
There is no evidence that the 6-pointed star originated with Lucifer/Satan (who is usually associated with the upside-down 5-pointed star). Nor is there any good evidence that the 6-pointed star originated from pagans pre-dating the time of King David, thus there is absolutely no reason to diminish the Star of David simply because some Cultic or Pagan groups adopted and used the symbol in their traditions in later times. In fact, finding the Star of David in artifacts left behind by so-called "pagan" peoples... stretching from the Indian sub-continent to Europe... actually parallels the dispersions and migrations of 10-Israelite peoples (the Lost Tribes of Israel). We must remember that 10-Israel became very "pagan" and offensive to יהוה prior to the Assyrian Captivity and likely continued in those and new offensive practices while in exile. BUT... we must also remember that 10-Israel had a great love and jealousy for David (2 Samuel 19:43), thus they likely carried their greatest symbol of David with them in their migrations... even after they "ceased to be a people" (Hosea 1:4,10-11).
