The prophetic and literal mission of the future Eliyahu (Elijah) is ENORMOUS! One could otherwise say he has a rather impressive or daunting To-Do list.
Eliyahu's job description
- He will come BEFORE the Great and Terrible Day of יהוה (Malachi 4:5).
- He will cause ALL of Israel to remember the Torah of Moses (Malachi 4:4).
- He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers (Malachi 4:6).
- He will restore ALL things (Matthew 17:10-14). Yeshua doesn't really elaborate on what He meant by "ALL". We are left to guess to some degree, but what has been removed which is in need of restoration? 10-Israel? the Altar? the Temple? the Sons of Tsadok? the Shekhinah presence at the Place of the Great Name? the Festivals? the Calendar system?
- He will prepare the way of יהוה and will make straight in the desert a highway for our Elohim. As John the Baptist prepared the way for Yeshua at His first coming, the future Eliyahu will likely do the same before Yeshua returns (Matthew 3:3; John 1:23; Isaiah 40:3). This is an assumption of sorts, but seems to concur with the previous to-do items.
Identifying the Impostors
Being aware of the list above should help us all more readily identify any current or future impostors of Eliyahu who succumb to something like the Jerusalem Syndrome. However, many or possibly all of those who will become the First Fruits offering (aka, the 144,000 described in Revelation) may indeed eventually be empowered by the Spirit of Eliyahu the way it empowered Elisha (II Kings 2:15), but this does not mean any one of these individuals is THE Eliyahu per se. They may work in concert with him and possibly at his direction, yet patience and watchfulness should be the rule until the real Eliyahu is made known via his WORKS, not his oratory skills.
Many will likely come claiming to be Eliyahu and many will certainly come claiming to be the Messiah. However, be careful not to be duped or lead astray. For Yeshua said:
(5) “For many shall come in My Name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and they shall lead many astray.
(6) “And you shall begin to hear of wars and reports of wars. See that you are not troubled, for these have to take place, but the end is not yet.
(7) “For nation shall rise against nation, and reign against reign. And there shall be scarcities of food, and deadly diseases, and earthquakes in places.
(8) “And all these are the beginning of birth pains.
(9) “Then they shall deliver you up to affliction and kill you, and you shall be hated by all nations for My Name’s sake.
(10) “And then many shall stumble, and they shall deliver up one another, and shall hate one another.
(11) “And many false prophets shall rise up and lead many astray.
(12) “And because of the increase in lawlessness, the love of many shall become cold.
(13) “But he who shall have endured to the end shall be saved.
(14) “And this Good News of the reign shall be proclaimed in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end shall come.
- Matthew 24:5-14
