In Rambam’s Introduction to the Mishnah, we read:
“If there are 1000 prophets, all of them of the stature of Elijah and Elisha, giving a certain interpretation, and 1001 Rabbis giving the opposite interpretation, you shall ‘incline after the majority’ and the law is according to the 1001 Rabbis, not according to the 1000 venerable prophets... God did not permit us to learn from the prophets, only from the Rabbis who are men of logic and reason.”
The whole "go with the majority" suggestion by Rambam is flawed on many levels.
When the majority runs to evil, are we to run with them?
Know this, the majority opinion doesn't matter. The opinion of יהוה is what matters.
Exodus 23:2 “You shall not go after the majority to do evil, neither shall you testify in a matter of strife to incline after the majority to pervert justice."
Isn't that interesting? Rambam takes Exodus 23:2 out of context in order to support his "majority rules" decree, in essence making it mean the opposite of what the context clearly portrays. He is a "Great One" (that is the literal meaning of the word "Rabbi"), so we are to presume Rambam has the right to remove the contextual words of יהוה. Should this be surprising? The rabbis routinely break Deuteronomy 4:1-6 and 12:32 by adding commandments to the Torah. Why not delete some Torah as well?
What did Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) say?
Matthew 7:13 "Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it."
It is safe to say we should only incline after the majority if the majority is moving in a righteous-Torah direction.
Go in the Way of Yah! And serve not two masters!
