Five ways the word "Israel" can be used

Context in Scripture is generally simple to discern. Context in conversation is a bit more tricky, especially when the subject of "Israel" is broached.
  1. Israel, the man. He was the son of Isaak, the grandson of Abraham. Once known by the name Jacob or Ya'acov.
  2. All the children of Israel or sons of Israel who left together out of Egypt, including a "mixed multitude", were known as "Israel".
  3. The United Kingdom of Israel, sometimes referred to as the United Kingdom of David... since he was the first King who was able to unite all the tribes into one Kingdom.
  4. The Northern Kingdom of Israel or the House of Israel, otherwise known today as the "Lost Ten Tribes of Israel", consisted of the ten tribes which split off from King Rehoboam (the grandson of King David).
  5. The present day nation of Israel. Even though President Truman expected the new Jewish nation to take on the name "Judea", the name Israel was chosen instead.
