Aviv Found in Northern Negev! Feast of Unleavend Bread begins at sunset of April 6th (2012)

Aviv Found in Northern Negev!

We found two fields of Aviv barley in the northern Negev at Bit'cha and Gama Junction. This means the next new moon expected on March 23 will be the beginning of the new biblical year and Chag HaMatzot (Feast of Unleavened Bread) will begin two weeks later at sunset on April 6. However, visibility of the new moon from Israel is uncertain for March 23. If it is not seen that night the new biblical month will begin Saturday night March 24 and Chag HaMatzot will begin at sunset on April 7.

New Moon of Aviv Sighted

On Friday March 23, 2012 the new moon was sighted from Israel. The moon was first sighted:
*from Jerusalem at 6:14pm by Nehemia Gordon and shortly thereafter by Keith Johnson and Jocelyn Carabello;
*from Aviel at 6:16pm by Chad and Barbara Peterson and Ephraim Frank;
*from Poriya at 6:20pm by Willie Ondricek and about ten others;
*from Givat Hamoreh by Dina Marcus at 6:22pm and shortly thereafter by Avi Marcus.

Earlier in the day two fields of Aviv barley were located in the Jordan Valley, one north of Marj e-Naja and the other at Tal Malkoach. Yesterday two other fields of Aviv barley were located in the northern Negev. This makes the current new moon Chodesh Ha-Aviv, the new moon of the Aviv, which marks the beginning of the new Hebrew year, in accordance with Deuteronomy 16:1 "Observe the new moon (chodesh) of the Aviv." Chag HaMatzot (the Feast of Unleavened Bread) will begin at sunset on April 6, 2012.

When is Yom Teruah? 2010

UPDATES: "Observers from Jerusalem, Ramle, Tekoa, and Aminadau Forest report no moon sighted." - Nehemia Gordon

"After a careful search of the skies around Jerusalem and reports from other new moon observers, we can conclude that the new moon marking the beginning of the seventh biblical month has not been seen over the Land of Israel. We can expect it to be easily visible tomorrow over all of the Land of Israel, meaning that Yom HaTeruah (The Day of Noise Making) will begin tomorrow evening (Fri 10 Sep) at sunset." - Melech ben Ya'aqov

When is Yom Teruah?

Next week is the biblical festival of Yom Teruah, the Day of Shouting/Trumpeting (literally: noise-making). The moon will definitely be visible from Israel on Friday night September 10, so the question is whether it will also be visible Thursday night. The answer is yes and no. Yes it will be visible Thursday night, but no, not from the Land of Israel. Let me explain. Thursday night the moon will have 2.5% illumination over Jerusalem and normally that should make it easy to sight. But the lagtime - the time between sunset and moonset - will only be 23 minutes. This short lagtime means that the moon will set before the light of the sun fades, making it impossible to see the moon. As you travel south the lagtime will increase, so in the southern hemisphere and even in some parts of the northern hemisphere it will be easy to see but not in Israel. I will be traveling down to Eilat where the lagtime will increase to 26
minutes. Previous experience indicates that 26 minutes will not be enough to sight the moon, although I will attempt to do so. I will be sending out a report late Thursday when I return from Eilat, but it's a 4.5 hour drive to Jerusalem so that probably won't be until well after midnight. I will, however, tweet the results from the road and you can check that out at:

Harvest-Ripe Barley in the Jordan Valley

This morning (Mar 30, 2010) I did a follow-up of the barley in the Jordan Valley that was Aviv on March 17. The barley in two fields, south of Nakhal Milkha and just north of the Israeli army checkpoint, was completely harvest-ripe. This means the barley harvest could officially begin this coming Sunday, the morrow after the Sabbath during the Feast of Unleavened Bread as per Deuteronomy 16:9. In Temple times, the first Omer (sheaf) of this harvest would be brought as the wave-sheaf offering commanded in Leviticus 23:10. A video of the field of 6-row planted barley south of Nakhal Milkha is posted at:

This confirms that the Chag HaMatzot (Feast of Unleavened Bread) will begin at sunset tomorrow night, March 31, 2010.

A video showing the difference between barley and "tares" is posted at:

My thanks to Shoshanah Waterman and Joe Dumond for participating in this follow-up barley examination.

More Aviv Barley Found, Moon Not Sighted

We looked for the moon from Israel tonight (Mar 16) but did not sight it. With only 0.77% of the illuminated portion of the moon facing earth, visibility was not expected from Israel and our attempted observations confirmed this. Tomorrow evening (Mar 17) will be New Moon Day by default, although we will still carry out observations to confirm its visibility from Israel.

Shavuot, the Ten Commandments, and the Founding of the State of Israel (1948)

Just received the following from Nehemia Gordon. I believe it was Michael Rood who I first heard connect Shavout (Pentecost) with the Founding of the Jewish State in 1948. It is a very interesting reality. Many people poo poo the significance of the founding of Israel in 1948 because it was done by a "secular" world body (U.N.), but those people forget that YHVH used many secular leaders in the past to accomplish His purposes. King Cyrus of Persia (who YHVH called "anointed") helped Judah return to Zion the first time.

Shalom from exile,
Hanok

Subject: [Karaite Korner Newsletter] #385: Shavuot, the Ten Commandment, and the State of Israel

Shavuot, the Ten Commandments, and the State of Israel

We are now three days away from Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks! The Feast of Shavuot is often associated with the revelation at Sinai in which the Almighty proclaimed the Ten Commandments directly to the ancient Israelites. Scripture never actually connects Shavuot with this event. In the Torah, Shavuot is also known as the "Day of Firstfruits" (Numbers 28:26) and the "Feast of Harvest" (Exodus 23:16). However, the revelation of Sinai does appear to have taken place around the same time as Shavuot. The section in the Torah on the Ten Commandments opens with the statement that the Israelites arrived in the Sinai Desert on the 3rd month, but does not state on which day of the month this was (Exodus 19:1). The Hebrew phrase "on the 3rd month" can also mean "on the 3rd new moon". Shavuot itself is not a fixed day of the month but rather on the 50th day counted from the morrow after the Sabbath during Chag HaMatzot (Feast of Unleavened Bread). Shavuot can fall out any time from 4th day of the 3rd month until the 12th, depending on when the "morrow after the Sabbath" during Chag HaMatzot. This means that the revelation of Sinai might have taken place on Shavuot, even though this is not stated anywhere in the Bible. We can say with confidence that the revelation at Sinai took place around the same time as Shavuot.

Recently I learned about another fascinating connection to Shavuot. In his new book "Restoring Abrahamic Faith" (available from http://genesis2000.org/), Professor James Tabor of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte argues that the State of Israel was established on the biblical date of Shavuot. Most history books simply record that the modern Jewish state was founded on May 14, 1948 and some add that this was the 5th of Iyyar on the "Jewish" calendar. Of course, Iyyar is the Babylonian name used by the Rabbis to refer to the 2nd Biblical Month. On page 99 of his book Tabor writes:

"In 1948 the intercalated 13th month, Adar II, was added to the year, based on [the] mathematical Hillel calendar... However, if one goes by the observation method, as the Karaite Jews, and refrains from adding Adar II, everything is moved back one lunar month... This system of the observed calendar will obviously be restored in the future..."

Tabor concludes that based on the ancient and future biblical calendar there should not have been a 13th month in 1948 and therefore the State of Israel was really founded on Shavuot! This certainly is an exciting suggestion and if nothing else reminds us of the magnitude of the miracle that took place in 1948. Of course, no one was actually observing the Aviv in 1948 so there is no way to know for sure whether the State of Israel was established in the 3rd biblical month or the 2nd. Nevertheless, we can say with confidence that the establishment of the State of Israel took place around the same time as Shavuot.

Aviv Found!

On Thursday March 26, 2009 we found Aviv Barley in two fields in the Jordan Valley, several kilometers south of Beth Shean. Samplings from these plots of barley were between 70% and 90% Aviv or beyond. Much of the barley we found had ripened past the stage of Aviv. Based on this there will definitely be sufficient quantities of barley that will be harvest-ready in two weeks time. Therefore, the upcoming new moon this Friday night will begin the Month of the Aviv and the new biblical year.

Chag HaMatzot (the Feast of Unleavened Bread) will begin on April 10 at sunset and continue until April 17 at sunset.

Photographs of this year's Aviv taken by CB Newman are posted at:

The following people participated in today's Aviv Search:
Nehemia Gordon, Ruthanne Koch, Devorah Gordon, Dina Marcus, Daniel Pitrone, Baruch ben Hosea, Adam Kinghorn, Bruce Brill, Larry Moldaur, Valerie Knowles, Miri Burgin, C. B. Newman, and Randy Boer.

We will examine the barley in the northern Negev tomorrow. However, our findings so far are adequate to determine that the upcoming new moon will begin the new biblical year.

New Moon Report
October 31, 2008
Eighth Biblical Month

On Friday October 31, 2008 the new moon was easily visible from Israel. I first sighted the moon from Jerusalem at 5:01 pm.

Last night (Thursday Oct 30) visibility was uncertain. In most months visibility can be predicted (assuming no clouds) by comparing the
astronomical data of the month in question with that of previous sightings. However, in a minority of months visibility simply cannot
be predicted with any certainty nor can it be entirely ruled out. In such instances we go based on raw 30th-day sighting which means we
look for the moon on the evening that begins the 30th day. If the moon is sighted then the "30th day" becomes the 1st day of the new month.
If the moon is not sighted then the new month begins the following evening. This month visibility could not be predicted on the evening
that began the 30th day (Thursday evening). Because the moon was not sighted on Thursday evening, Friday evening automatically became the
beginning of the new month.
