I must first give credit to my lovely wife for the delicious title.
If you’re not from the United States, particularly from the South or Mid-west, you may not know what a “Sloppy Joe” is. (Follow the link for a real-life description of Sloppy Joes). In short, it is a really messy sandwich. It comes in all shapes and sizes and is frequently worn by the inexperienced consumer, especially small children.
And of course, you’re probably wondering: what do “Sloppy Joes” have to do with “Jews and Joes”?
Well, it actually doesn’t have much to do with the Jews, but the phrase illustrates the Joes (or Ephraimites) perfectly.
There is an ancient prophecy regarding the Joes that may seem a bit shocking or surprising:
Hosea 9:3: reads [bold mine]:
They shall not dwell in the land of YHVH, but Ephrayim shall return to Mitsrayim (Egypt), and eat unclean food in Ashshur (Assyria).
Well, we know the Jews have kept from unclean foods throughout all their many exiles and various homelands (which is an excellent proof that the Jews and the Joes represent different peoples/populations).
What is interesting, most of the people groups suspected of being descended from the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel are well known for their unclean foods (minus those groups that have been converted to Islam in Asia and the Middle East).
What is also interesting is the reality that the Joes have been forced into this sloppy condition because of their ancestors’ disobedience to the Torah (Hosea 9:17), and most of them continue in that defiance even in modern times.
