Shimon Peres warns evacuation of settlers may lead to civil war in Israel
"LONDON - President Shimon Peres told members of the British Parliament Wednesday that Israel would have difficulty dismantling West Bank settlements without causing a civil war in Israel." - Peres warns evacuation of settlers may lead to civil war (Haaretz)
There are those who think this "civil war" will lead to a separate Jewish state and are connecting the formation of this state to prophecies of Revelation 12, Isaiah 66, and Ezekiel 37.
ISRAELI PRESIDENT SHIMON PERES'S Q&A SESSION IN PARLIAMENT (full text):
PERES: "The policy of the Government of Israel is to stop any expansion of settlements in the West Bank. As a matter of fact it undertook to dismantle some illegal settlements that were built over the last years but to be honest it's not a simple proposition and I want to explain why.
We tried to do it alone. We left Gaza completely. There is no longer any military person or any civilian, Israeli, in Gaza. Furthermore we dismantled twenty-two settlements in Gaza that we built by ourselves without any pressure and four more settlements in the northern part of the West Bank. We mobilised 45,000 policemen to bring the settlers back home. It wasn't an easy experience. We spent $2.5 billion on that operation and we left Gaza completely. What happened [in] the next days - the next days they started to fire missiles against our villages. We are democratic people. We are democratic people. What can I really answer? A person that comes to me and says: You want it to do again? You want again to dismantle settlements and make a basis to fire missiles against us? Maybe it's a simple question but it's very hard to answer simple questions and we try to convince the people - stop it.
The whole story of Gaza is a terrible story. May I say that the Palestinians / the Palestinian Authority are trying to do their best but they too were expelled from Gaza and they tried to take over the West Bank. So it's not a simple proposition. I don't say that we are going to stop or change our minds but I want you to know that it is easier said than done. To move a hundred or a hundred and fifty thousand settlers by force and not to be careful in introducing a civil war is a real piece of art. So the problem is not theoretic. We are trying now again to see if we can bring tranquillity to Gaza. And we are trying, as you probably read in the papers to dismantle the illegal settlements. One place already was three times dismantled and destroyed so we don't have to be convinced. We need the other side to the story. We cannot do it alone. We don't ask the Arabs to dismantle settlements but we do ask them to dismantle the rockets, to stop shooting."
