The founder of FamilyTreeDNA is frequently asked this question I'm sure... and here is his response: http://jewsandjoes.com/pdf/can-dna-testing-confirm-jewish-ancestry.pdf

My perspective goes beyond what is considered "Jewish DNA" because the Jews don't represent all of the 12 tribes. That is why this website may seem confusing to many. I go into much more detail here: Israelite and Noahic Haplogroup Hypotheses.

$150.00 is indeed alot to many... especially in the current economic climate. For those people, I strongly recommend waiting. Even if you do prove that you have Jewish Ancestry in the mainstream sense, the modern nation of Israel and the Talmudic system in control there has a very complex/complicated conversion process. DNA proof doesn't necessarily give you a get-in-the-land free card.

Is there really a 'jew dna' that is different from other dna types? I want to take the test but I am not gonna expose such personal information to some database, let alone blow 150$ on a con. I would like to take the test because I think I might be of Jewish ancestry and if I am, I will leave USA for Israel forthwith. However, I need to know there is a definitive method for accurate delineation of Jewish dna. This website seems to offer more confusion than clarity.

Check out all the mtDNA Haplogroups in this FamilyTreeDNA project: Jewish Heritage Project. You'll see yDNA results as well.

Shalom Nora,
Apparently mtDNA Haplogroups K and H are the most prevalent in Ashkenazi Jewish populations. There really isn't any definitive yDNA or mtDNA Haplogroup which proves you have Hebrew blood. Yet, every individual has so many ancestors from so many divergent lines, it is quite possible that 95% of the world population has at least one "Hebrew" ancestor. You likely have a mixture of both Ephraimite and Yehudi (Judah) blood lines.

Thank you Nora for sharing your Hg. Do you also have a family tradition of having Jewish ancestors or just suspicion of Catholic/Protestant conversos?
